Have you ever realized that you had control over dream while you are having it? This can range from simply being aware that you are dreaming to taking control of the dream. Most often this occurs when one suddenly realizes that one can fly. Here are some ways to improve your ability to control your dreams.
Several times a day remind yourself that you’re not dreaming. I know this may sound silly but it is preparation for when your sleep you find yourself wondering, “am I dreaming?”
Is very important to keep a dream journal. This can be done several ways either actually writing things down as soon as you wake up which only requires a notebook and a pen. Another possibility is to use a recording app on your smart phone or actually have a tape recorder which you can speak the dream into as soon as you wake up.
We know that dreaming occurs approximately an hour to an hour and a half after you’ve fallen asleep. It takes that long for the body to go through all five levels of sleep and back to what is called the rapid eye movement or REM dream state. With this in mind you can set your alarm clock to wake you up and by changing the time you can determine when you personally reach this dream state. Learning to wake up at least once during the night may allow you to have more access to your dreams.
Another important technique is to have a few minutes set aside before you fall asleep in which you picture yourself in a dream of your choosing. Continue to repeat this series of images in your mind which you can accompany with repeated thoughts of wanting to have this kind of dream tonight. This positive imagery helps you to set the tone for a vivid dream.
Another technique is to mark the letter A on your hand and stare at it before you go to sleep. Remind yourself that the a stands for awake and when you find yourself in a dream try to glance at your hand and if you notice the a reminding yourself that you are awake in your dream. It is also important to stop for a moment to several times a day and glance at your hand noting the letter a and reminding yourself, “am I dreaming?”
During the day when you feel as if something seems out of the ordinary or strongly frustrating perform what is called a reality check. If you have a digital clock stare at it and imagine that it’s not moving. If you’re reading a book look at the text is a picture and then hold that picture in your mind as you look away from the book then look back and see if you can notice anything having been changed. You can try flipping on and off your light switch. There is a moment before you acknowledge the darkness when everything still seems lit up and illuminated in your mind. Concentrate on extending that period of illumination. Another technique is called mirror gazing in which you stare at your face in the mirror and close your eyes imagining the same image.
There are some other techniques or exercises that you can perform during the day and add to your positive imagery before you go to sleep. The first is simply jumping in the air. Many times when you find yourself jumping in a dream it will lead to the ability to fly. The second exercise is to lean against a wall several times during the day. You can get some exercise while doing this by bending your knee slightly. Again reminding yourself of this position just before you go to sleep will give you a greater possibility of finding yourself doing this in a dream. However in dreams this very likely leads to your ability to simply fall through a wall. Third exercise is to pinch or poke yourself several times during the day. Reminding yourself of this image before you go to sleep will give you a greater chance that you may do it in a dream.
Repeating to yourself the phrase, “I will dream about” filling in whatever particular thing you would like to dream about several times before you go to sleep increases your chances of having that dream.
Lastly when you do recall a dream finish it off in any way that you would like. Meditating on the dream in total going through each phase of including the parts that you made up a very important in a good way to increase your chances of controlling your dreams.
